SANCTUS2021 - What we are doing this year:

INSPIRATION

As we are unable to gather in person for a full-scale conference due to COVID-19, we have been producing a series of supplemental video and print materials that can be used to complement or integrate into existing curricula for youth and Confirmation programming that explore the dignity inherent in each unique human life and our particular identities.

Much of the motivation for the content for this year’s SANCTUS production is rooted in the increasing divisions seen in our nation and the tendency to reduce one another to labels and fragments of who we are. The very parts of ourselves that shape the unique persons we are to be as members of Christ’s body become targets of judgment and division. This is a reality we might see most clearly in youth when they celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation—the challenge of loving and accepting themselves for who they are, rather than being weighed down by what they believe the world thinks they should be.

PURPOSE
The overall goal of this series is to allow young people to encounter “the other” so as to more fully come to appreciate and accept their own dignity and that of one another.  This will be accomplished by providing narratives that allow young people to either personally relate to the particular facets of identity discussed, or to build empathy for individuals different from themselves. In so doing, we hope hearts will be opened to see how aspects of their own identity are conduits through which God can be known and grace can be encountered.

We hope that by giving diverse and moving narratives that turn labels into faces, and faces into disciples seeking God, the Spirit may move in the hearts of young people to take pride in who they are how they are called to be instruments in the movement of salvation.

SANCTUS2021 FACILITATOR GUIDE

We invite you to make use of the SANCTUS2021 resources for your youth and young adult groups, class sessions, Confirmation programs, and as retreat content.  Please note that this is in no way a comprehensive curriculum, but rather supplemental resources to assist you in bringing new voices and perspectives to deepening the awareness of the dignity inherent in each of our young people.

There are two components to the supplemental materials: the video content and the reflection/discussion guides.

The Reflection/Discussion Guides:

Each contains an excerpt from Scripture, quotes from magisterial documents, and questions for reflection and discussion. There are questions to be reviewed to reflect on the provided excerpts and questions after viewing the video reflections.

The Video Reflections:

There are two sets of video reflections: "general content" and "personal stories."

  • We recommend the use of all general content videos.

  • The diversity represented among the personal testimonies allows you to use all, or select particular stories that are most relevant to members of your community.  You may want to focus on stories that align with their experiences, or stories that stretch and challenge their experiences.  We recommend selecting some of each.

Recommended Process:

For each video and reflection/discussion guide, we recommend:

  1. First going over the Scripture quotes and excerpts from Church documents and pre-viewing questions for reflection.

  2. After grounding the reflection in Scripture and tradition, the video reflections offer a new context to understand, reflect upon, and apply the presented themes.

  3. After viewing the video reflection, review the questions for reflection and discussion.

Recommended Unit Order:

  1. "The Value of You"  Reflection/Discussion Guide and Video

  2. Relevant selections of personal story reflection/discussion guides and videos

  3. "You Do You"  Reflection/Discussion Guide and Video
